Retinitis Pigmentosa

Retinitis pigmentosa is an inherited disease condition affecting the retina’s ability to respond to light. Retina is a layer of cells lining the back of the eyes that have light-sensing property and converts light rays into nerve impulses. The brain receives these nerve impulses through optic nerves and recognizes the images. A patient with retinitis pigmentosa suffers from degeneration of this retina layer of cells and eventually results in blindness. The condition can occur in a person whose any one of the parents or family member has the history of retinal degeneration causing a slow loss of vision.

Causes of Retinitis Pigmentosa

A mutation in the genetic structure is considered as the cause of development of this condition. This mutation may be transferred from parents to offspring’s resulting in passage of the disease to future degenerations.
