A weight loss journey is something quite complex. What with the fitness trends and several special diets that people try to incorporate into their lives? But, as an Ayurvedic practitioner at Ayur Bethniya, I, Dr. Soorej, have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of the right dietary choices. I have seen during my clinical experiences that patients benefit much more when guided by a philosophy that blends modern nutritional science with the timeless principles of Ayurveda.

From these experiences, I have created a list of 10 superfoods for weight loss that can help you a lot in your fitness journey.

Superfoods that help in effective weight loss!

Well, here are a few superfoods that my years of experience as an Ayurvedic practitioner have guided me to.

1. Leafy greens

Leafy greens are packed with fibers, micronutrients and antioxidants. They can be quite helpful in balancing Kapha dosha and improving satiety. This can effectively lead to proper weight loss.
Ayurveda often links Kapha Dosha to weight gain, and a proper balancing leads to weight loss without affecting your energy levels. A few good examples include spinach, fenugreek and Kale.

2. Lentils and legumes

These two have been regular ingredients in most of the Indian cooking styles. They are high in protein and quite light. That should make them quite easy to digest.
These weight loss superfoods have a very low glycemic index. That should make them keep your blood sugar levels and cravings in check. This is an important factor in a reliable weight loss. A few good options to try include moong dal and chickpeas.

3. Chia seeds

This is something new to the Indian kitchens, but has been adopted by many homemakers. These little seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. They are also the best source of soluble fiber.
These seeds absorb water and thus make you feel full. In essence, that should help you in promoting a healthy digestion. You can add them to smoothies after soaking or even add them to curd.

4. Greek Yoghurt

Greek yoghurt is rich in protein and probiotics. The plain dahi has been known for promoting gut health and helping in satiety. The dahi contains live cultures and can go a long way in enhancing digestion and metabolism.
There are several ways you can include it in your diet. Use it with raita or eat plain with fruits. I generally prescribe these two options for a better result.

5. Makhana

If you are into processed foods, you can indeed replace them with Makhana. In fact, they have been a time-tested Ayurvedic snack. It is low in calories and rich in plant protein.
You can use roasted makhana to help stop the cravings for unhealthy processed foods. I prescribe it roasted, tossed with a pinch of turmeric and salt, served at tea time.

6. Whole grains

Whole grains are a rich source of fiber. When you compare them to polished or processed grains, they offer you an excellent array of benefits. These superfoods for weight loss can prevent unhealthy spikes in blood sugar.
They also keep you feeling full. That should make sure that you do not overeat. Some of these include brown rice, millets and quinoa. I generally prescribe them in the form of  Multigrain rotis, millet upma, or brown rice pulao.

7. Sweet potato

Sweet potatoes are another rich source of fiber, vitamins and complex carbs. These nutrients can help reduce sweet cravings considerably. These superfoods can keep you full for hours, without affecting your energy.
In Ayurveda, root vegetables are known to balance the Vata Dosha and thus help in balancing the weight loss. My typical prescriptions include steaming or roasting it with Indian spices for breakfast or snacks.

8. Turmeric

The golden spice is known well enough for its anti-inflammatory and metabolism boosting properties. As per Ayurveda, turmeric boosts the digestive fire or Agni. It also helps control the accumulation of fat.
According to ancient Ayurvedic texts, turmeric is known to support detoxification of the body. You do not need to consume it a lot. Just add a pinch to curries and other preparations. You can also drink it mixed with milk at bedtime.

9. Cottage Cheese

Known in Indian homes as Paneer, it is a great vegetarian weight loss meal. The superfood is rich in protein and calcium. Paneer is richly fulfilling and thus reduces unhealthy cravings.
I usually recommend low-fat Paneer and cooking it with less oil. You can have it as a veg-based accompaniment or choose to have it as a proper meal.

10. Amla

Ayurveda rates Amla as the best ingredient for Rasayana. It is rich in Vitamin C and aids in a proper digestion. It can help you detoxify your body and help you optimise your digestion.

Daily consumption can also help you strengthen your immunity and encourage an excellent gut health. I generally recommend taking Amla juice with warm water on an empty stomach.
