Hi. I am Dr Surej, Senior Consultant Physician (MD in Ayurveda) practicing at Ayur Bethaniya.

Even though advanced societies practice Ayurveda in so many ways, confusion and questions regarding detoxification still exist. As a certified Ayurvedic Physician, I believe it is my responsibility to clear these doubts regarding the procedure and related practices. Many people whom I have seen over the years are unknowingly following strict fasting and expensive wellness programs, which they think are part of Ayurveda Detoxification practices for everyday balance.

One thing I have to share is that, according to Ayurveda, Detoxification is less complicated compared to these practices. A small change in daily routine and habits is what we need for an effective procedure that is sustainable. Based on my experience treating patients, I can confidently say that they have recovered from poor digestion, stress, lifestyle imbalances, and disturbed sleep.

Modern lifestyle contributes immensely to the accumulation of metabolic toxins, commonly known as “ Ama” in Ayurveda. From food habits to sleep disturbances, anything can result in this condition. Once this condition affects you, you will have no balance between your mind and body. Dinacharya has a close connection with detoxification, and a healthy routine will help you align with nature’s rhythm.

Start the Day Early

I have been waking up before sunrise for many years now, and that has made my life result-oriented. By waking up early, we can develop better mental clarity, as it is considered the most balanced period of the day. I have also started this practice based on my recommendation and results, such as an improvement in energy level, which became more evident within weeks.

As per Ayurveda, the body performs its cleansing activities during the night. This process will be completed efficiently by waking up early so that there will be no tiredness or sluggishness once you wake up.

Drink Warm Water After Waking up

Beginning the day with a cup of warm water will make you energised and refreshed for the rest of the day. I have been suggesting this to my patients and now to you that drinking warm water will support proper digestion and bowel movement, and activate the digestive fire, which is known by the name “ Agni”

I also suggest using a slice of ginger or small drops of lemon, based on the overall functioning of the body of the individual. Warm water helps to remove toxins and make the digestive system fully ready for the day. If the consumption of cold beverages makes the digestive system weak, warm water does the opposite.

Tongue Scraping and Oil Pulling

I have known the effectiveness of tongue scraping personally, as I have been doing this procedure for my own good for many years. Removing the layer of toxin early in the morning that appears on the surface of the tongue the previous night will boost digestion and is also a good hygiene practice.

Oil pulling is also one of those detoxification techniques that needs to be repeated every day. Swishing sesame or coconut oil in the mouth before brushing is a highly popular method among my patients, as it helps them with fresher breath and healthy gums. It also prevents toxin accumulation in the oral cavity.

Follow a Simple and Warm Diet

Proper digestion is one of the most important aspects of health, according to Ayurveda. This is why I believe following the right food practices and habits is essential to improve the effectiveness of the rest of the detoxification practices.  Everyone should follow proper food practices, including warm and freshly cooked food based on the seasons.

I don’t encourage the consumption of processed food, cold drinks, or deep-fried food items, as they can disturb the overall functioning of the body, according to Ayurveda. Cumin-coriander-fennel tea and other herbal drinks will keep the digestive system well-protected and reduce bloating.

Simple meals should often be preferred over unnecessary diets.

Reduce Mental Toxins

Mental overload, anger, and anxiety should also be controlled, along with physical exhaustion, to maintain the right internal balance. I often ask my patients not to use their digital devices before bedtime, as that is not a healthy practice according to Ayurveda.

From reading to prayer and from meditation to nature walks, these practices will keep the nervous system active and young for a long period of time. Adequate sleep is necessary for the functioning of the body's mechanisms.

Support Natural Elimination

Ayurveda advises a healthy bowel routine every day. I have seen people ignoring the initial stages of constipation/bowel problems and starting to notice once it starts to affect their sleep and mood.  Poor digestion and irregular elimination are also part of lifestyle changes.

Natural cleansing, according to Ayurveda, happens only when the food habits are regularly maintained with the right food, hydration and adequate fiber. consumption. We also recommend certain natural herbs to help our patients support bowel health at Ayur Bethaniya.

Practice Abhyanga ( Oil Massage)

Even though not many perform this, Abhyanga is one of the most useful detoxification practices, supporting everyday balance. From stress to body stiffness, this technique is one solution that I recommend to everyone for a quick recovery.

A warm oil massage supports healthy circulation, nourishes tissues and makes the nervous system calm. Abhyanga is also well-known for its preventive and rejuvenating properties in Ayurveda.
