When patients enter my cabin at Ayur Bethaniya, one of the constant complaints they have is persistent back pain. As an Ayurvedic practitioner, I can guarantee that treating spinal health and disk-related issues requires more than just symptomatic relief; it needs a holistic approach that addresses the root cause.
I am Dr. Surej Subash, an MD in Ayurveda and senior consultant physician. Currently, I am practicing at Ayur Bethaniya, a dedicated Ayurveda hospital in Kerala.
Through this blog, I will share my firsthand experience with the Ayurvedic approach to spinal health and disk-related issues. The blog also offers you an insight into managing your disk-related issues and having a healthy spine.
The spine through Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, the spine is treated as part of the Madhya marga. It is the central channel for vitality and life force energy. It is not just a structural support. But it is a foundation that supports several other parts of your body.
The spine houses the delicate nervous system, supports our posture, enables flexibility, and facilitates the smooth circulation of prana (life force energy) throughout the body. Imagine there is some sort of misalignment. You will come across a cascade of health issues ranging from chronic pain and stiffness to neurological disturbances and reduced mobility.
How does Ayurveda treat Disk related issues?
As far as my practice at Ayur Bethaniya is concerned, I come across patients who suffer from disk-related issues. These include herniation, bulging disks, disk degeneration, and conditions like sciatica or radiculopathy.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, these spinal disorders primarily stem from imbalances in the Vata dosha, which governs movement, flexibility, and the nervous system.
When Vata becomes aggravated, it causes dryness, stiffness, degeneration, inflammation, and pain in the spinal tissues. It can happen due to poor lifestyle habits, improper posture, prolonged sitting, physical strain, dehydration, or advancing age.
Treatments in Ayurveda for maintaining a healthy spine include both symptomatic and holistic. I provide treatments that address the underlying dosha imbalances while simultaneously providing relief from pain and discomfort.
My clinical approach to spinal health
Based on the years of experience that I have gained in treating patients with varying spinal conditions, I have developed a comprehensive treatment protocol.
Kati Basti
This is one of the first treatments I suggest for treating lower back pain and lumbar disk issues. It involves pooling warm medicated oil around the lower back region. The medicated oil penetrates the skin to lubricate the vertebrae and, at a deeper energetic level, unblocks the lower chakras, allowing prana to flow more freely through the spine.
Pizhichil
It involves the continuous pouring of warm medicated oil all over the body or specific regions. The treatment is known to be deeply relaxing and highly effective. It helps relieve weak, stiff, or damaged muscles associated with disk problems.
Kizhi
The Kizhi treatment works by rubbing or gently pounding the body with heated bundles filled with medicated herbs. These bundles are typically heated in a frying pan with medicated oil. The therapy helps reduce inflammation and improve tissue flexibility.
Greeva Basti
The treatment is designed explicitly for cervical spine issues and neck pain. Similar to Kati Basti, this therapy pools warm oil on the neck region. It reduces the stiffness and inflammation in the cervical spine.
In addition to these, I also use treatments like Dhanyamladhara, Lepam and various types of Kizhis such as Choornakizhi, Elakizhi, Naranga Kizhi and Njavara Kizhi. The exact treatment depends on the conditions of the patient and the presence of AMA in the body.
Panchakarma: The Foundation of Detoxification
Panchakarma is the Ayurvedic system of detoxification. I have used it on several of my patients for treating back pain and disk-related issues. The presence of toxins lodged in various difficult-to-reach places in the body is frequently responsible for the inflammation, stiffness, and weakness we experience as spinal pain. Vasthi, Virechana and Kashayam are the most commonly used Panchakarma treatments that I typically recommend.
I would recommend an Ayurvedic treatment lasting for three to four weeks that also includes either of the panchakarma and other therapies for patients with chronic spinal conditions. Panchakarma treatment involves both internal and external therapies. Based on the specific conditions of the patients, I recommend different aspects of Panchakarma therapy.
Herbal Medicines for Disk related issues
Through the years of practice, I have witnessed the remarkable healing properties of specific Ayurvedic herbs for spinal health.
A few good Ayurvedic herbs that I typically recommend for spinal health and disk-related issues are
- Ashwagandha – It helps reduce inflammation and helps strengthen the nerves
- Shatavari – The herb is known to regenerate tissues
- Bala – It helps improve muscle strength and provides support for nerves
- Guggulu – It can help relieve joint pain and stiffness
- Rasna and Nirgundi – They improve mobility and relieve pain symptoms.
Often prescribe formulations containing these herbs, which enhance disk hydration, improve flexibility, strengthen the musculoskeletal system, and reduce nerve inflammation.
Diet and lifestyle for Better spinal health
From the Ayurvedic point of view, diet is what directly influences Vata imbalance and tissue regeneration. I recommend my patients consume warm, nourishing, freshly cooked foods that pacify Vata dosha. Also, make sure to hydrate yourself to prevent tissue degeneration.
Also, I suggest the following lifestyle modifications –
- Maintaining proper posture while sitting, standing, and lifting objects
- Using ergonomic chairs and workstations
- Taking periodic breaks during long hours of sedentary work
- Ensuring regular, restorative sleep
- Managing stress through mindfulness practices
In my experience, correcting nutrition and ensuring proper sleep make a remarkable difference in both recovery from spinal conditions and prevention of future problems.
