Pregnancy is a unique phase in a woman’s life, full of emotional and physical changes. During this period, the body undergoes significant physical and mental changes. Expectant mothers generally go through several discomforts, such as soreness and pain. Back pain is a type of discomfort that occurs as the body adapts to accommodate the growing baby. Many pregnant women have sought Ayurvedic treatment for back pain during my practice as a consultant physician at Ayur Bethaniya. I will share my knowledge of practical pain management methods and treatments based on my vast experience using Ayurveda to help many pregnant women with their back pain.

Understanding Back Pain in Pregnancy

Throughout pregnancy, the uterus grows, exerting additional pressure on the back and pelvic area. According to Ayurveda, an imbalance in Vata dosha causes back pain. Back pain arises when the Vata dosha, responsible for movement and adaptability, becomes imbalanced. In Ayurvedic belief lifestyle, dietary factors, and mental stress contribute to back pain. Understanding the factors that cause back pain is crucial in preventing and managing it.

Causes of Back Pain

Several factors contribute to back pain during pregnancy. Here, I will discuss some of the main causes that lead to back pain.

  • Hormones: The rise in hormone levels during pregnancy causes the ligaments in the pelvic region to soften. The joints also loosen to prepare the body for childbirth. Pregnant women may experience back pain as a result of their ligaments and joints relaxing.
  • Weight: Some women experience back pain due to the additional weight that the growing baby contributes. Furthermore, back pain during pregnancy is also a result of being overweight before becoming pregnant.
  • Posture: Long periods of standing, bending, and poor posture can strain your muscles and spine, which often causes or exacerbates back pain.
  • Stress: Stress often builds up in the weaker parts of your body. During pregnancy, changes in your pelvic area can make your back more sensitive, resulting in more back pain than usual when there's stress.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Back Pain During Pregnancy

Ayurveda takes a comprehensive approach to treating back pain during pregnancy. The focus of Ayurvedic treatment for back pain during pregnancy is on pain management and prevention through various external and internal therapies and lifestyle modifications.

Avoiding Triggers

The body changes naturally during pregnancy, but certain actions can worsen back pain. For a healthy digestive system, stay away from cold, dry foods and have regular bowel movements. Try to limit long travel, use comfortable bedding, and avoid poor posture or sitting for too long. Reducing stress is also important to keep your body in balance. Since every woman’s body is different, it’s best to consult an Ayurvedic expert for personalised care.

External Therapies

  • Snehana (Oil Massage): Warm therapeutic oils are softly rubbed onto the back. This promotes tissue nourishment, enhances blood circulation, alleviates stiffness, and relieves discomfort. It helps loosen tight muscles, improve circulation, ease pain, and calm the body’s energy imbalances.
  • Swedana (Steam/Heat Therapy): Lower back stiffness is reduced and tense muscles are relaxed with mild, localized steam therapy. In pregnancy, it’s done carefully in short sessions under expert guidance.
  • Kati Pichu: Kati Pichu involves placing a warm, oil-soaked cotton pad on the sore area of the back. It’s a safe, calming way to ease pain and stiffness when done correctly.
    Internal Therapies

For deeper healing, Ayurveda also employs internal cleansing techniques. Only after the seventh month of pregnancy are these procedures carried out, and they are always done under a doctor's supervision. Herbal drinks and mild enemas aid in pain relief, balancing energy, and general well-being.  These techniques seek to reduce lower back stiffness and restore proper energy flow.

Internal Medicines

Ayurvedic herbs, when prescribed by an expert, are safe and help relieve back pain while also supporting the mother’s health and the baby’s development. During pregnancy, nourishing herbal blends called Rasayanas are often consumed with milk or ghee to increase energy and support the health of both the mother and the baby.

Dietary Changes

Choosing the right foods is crucial for pain management:

  • Include: Ghee, rice, milk, and other warm, fatty, and nourishing meals to help soothe the body. Drinking warm water can also help keep your energy in balance.
  • Avoid: Dry foods such as puffed rice, chilled drinks, and very spicy or bitter foods, as they can disturb digestion and worsen back pain.

Lifestyle Modifications

Small lifestyle adjustments can provide significant relief:

  • To prevent tension in the lower back, sit and sleep with the right support.
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects.
  • Try taking quick walks or doing some light stretching to keep your body flexible.
  • To support a healthy digestive system, drink warm water that can be flavored with cumin or fennel.
