Parkinson's Disease – the name itself is enough to send shudders across your spine. It definitely makes it quite a terrifying disease. The disease typically hits you when you are over 50, and it begins getting worse as you get older.

But is there a cure or Ayurvedic Treatment for Parkinson's Disease? Well, I am Dr Surej, a senior medical consultant at Ayurbethaniya. . I will guide you through the treatment options in Ayurveda for the disease.

What does Ayurveda think of Parkinson’s disease?

According to Ayurveda, the Parkinson’s disease is caused by the Vata element and its imbalance. This ailment begins to get chronic day by day and thus worsens over time. In Ayurveda, Parkinson’s disease is known as Kampavata.

That is exactly why Ayurveda focuses on treating the Parkinson's disease by taking care of the vata imbalance. These treatments will aim at bringing the vata imbalance back into normalcy.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Parkinson’s Disease

There are several treatments available for the Parkinson’s disease. The primary step in the treatment of Kampavata is to understand the cause of the disease, which can be either due to the depletion of tissues (Dhathukshayajanya) or due to the blockage of the channels (Margavarodhajanya).

Here are a few treatment options that I typically recommend at Ayur Bethaniya.

  • Shodhana Chikitsa – This treatment includes cleansing the body of the patient. This is followed by the palliative care. The intensity of the treatment depends on the strength of the patient and the prognosis of the disease. It also includes Panchakarma  which is the treatment  based on the conditions of the patient. More on that later in the blog.
  • Herbal medicines – We at Ayur Bethaniya also focus on the herbal medicines as well. They help you relieve rigidity and nourish the nervous system.
  • Dietary improvements – This treatment plan helps you improve your digestion to help improve the efficacy of the treatment.
  • Yoga and meditation – These options help you overcome the symptoms and manage the internal energy.

The Panchakarma Therapy

The Panchakarma therapy helps you eliminate the toxins from the body. This will help in the overall detoxification of the body. There are five different options used in the Panchakarma therapy. These include Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshan.

Ayurveda believes that the vata imbalance can also be caused by the toxic imbalances in the body. That is one of the prime reasons for why I recommend Panchakarma therapy as one of the best therapies for treating the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The treatments that I specifically focus on include Virechana, Basti, and Nasya. These treatments are known to have a good impact on the brain function and thus control the Parkinson's disease.

Abhyanga

The treatment makes use of the herbal oils that are specifically tailored to the conditions that the patient may be going through. The oils used in the Abhyanga will help in reducing the stiffness in the muscle. It also helps improve relaxation and blood circulation. If you are someone who is experiencing rigidity with the Parkinson’s disease, this should be the best treatment possible.

I recommend the use of medicated oils such as Dhanwantharam Thailam or Ksheerabala Thailam. They can be used for daily massages. In fact, the Abhyanga is one of the most powerful and stronger treatment options and an integral part of Ayurvedic care for Parkinson’s patients.

Diet options

The dietary options focus on the treatment for reducing or balancing the effects of vata dosha. It involves Incorporating warm, easily digestible foods with spices. The food items like ginger and turmeric aid in reducing Vata aggravation.

I suggest my patients to stay away from cold, dry, and raw foods, as well as caffeinated beverages. It is also important to keep your body hydrated.

Rasayana therapy

The Rasayana therapy is yet another option that I recommend for Parkinson's disease. The therapy is an excellent option for rejuvenating the body and mind. The treatment involves the use of special herbs to treat the symptoms of the disease.

Some of the treatment options offered would include Chyawanprash, Brahmi Ghrita, and Ashwagandha Rasayana. These will help nourish the nervous system and improve resilience against disease.

The scientific backing of the Ayurveda treatment

The Ayurvedic treatment for Parkinson's disease is definitely backed by the scientific research. The treatment highlights the neuroprotective properties of Ayurvedic herbs. The treatment used by Ayurvada through diet and herbs include the use of Ashwagandha and Mucuna Pruriens has been known to be quite effective as per the science based studies.

Ayurveda typically focuses on traditional Ayurvedic practices with modern insights to ensure comprehensive care for patients.
