A good blood circulation is essential for maintaining good health and vitality. In Ayurveda, the proper flow of Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue) and balanced Vata dosha are crucial for healthy circulation.

I am Dr. Surej Subash, an MD in Ayurveda and senior consultant physician. Currently, I am practicing at Ayur Bethaniya, a dedicated Ayurveda hospital in Kerala. From my clinical experience at Ayur Bethaniya, implementing Ayurvedic principles not only improves circulation but also rejuvenates the body holistically.

11 Ayurveda Tips to Improve Your Blood Circulation

Here are 12 effective Ayurveda tips that have consistently helped my patients improve their blood circulation naturally:

1. Daily Abhyanga (Oil Massage)

Abhyanga is the ancient art of self-oil massage. It is a core pillar in Ayurveda for balancing bodily doshas and invigorating the tissues. By using warm sesame or mustard oil, begin massaging from the scalp and work downwards by applying gently circular strokes on joints and long strokes on your limbs. This opens up micro - channels and encourages lymph drainage and supports the removal of metabolic waste, leading to improved blood flow. Let the oil sit for around 20 minutes before taking a bath. Doing this at least twice a week will show a visible improvement in skin health and circulation.

2. Regular Exercise and Yoga

Regular movement stimulates circulation, burns toxins and strengthens the heart. Incorporate light exercises like brisk walking, swimming or yoga. Yoga asanas such as Virbhadrasana (Warrior Pose), Sarvagangasana (Shoulder Stand), and Viparita Karani (Legs-up Pose) actively enhance circulation by improving vascular function and venous circulation. These expands blood vessels and increases nutrient delivery to tissues.

3. Herbal Teas

In Ayurveda, herbal teas are more than just comforting beverages, they are potent therapies for enhancing circulation. Drinking warming herbal teas made from ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, and tulsi improves circulation by promoting digestion and reducing toxins.Drinking these in the mornings, especially if the mornings are chilly or before meals ensure smooth movement of blood through the vessels.

4. Keep Warm and Protect yourself from cold

Those with poor blood circulation, cold extremities or vata imbalance must avoid cold foods and drinks.Instead, choose warm foods that are cooked thoroughly. When we keep our body and environment warm, it prevents our blood from withdrawing from the periphery, keeping the capillaries open and reducing the risk of stiffness and fatigue.

5. Proper Hydration with Warm Water

Drinking warm water promotes smoother circulation. When we begin our day with a glass of warm water, and continue doing so for the rest of the day, our tissues remain well hydrated, reducing the workload on our heart and blood vessels. This paired with herbal infusions, is very simple but really effective.

6. Dry Brushing

Dry brushing one's body is also called Garshana. Before doing Abhyanga, brushing one's body with a raw silk glove or a soft natural bristle bush will stimulate the skin’s surface, improving blood circulation, and activate lymphatic drainage. Start from your feet and move upwards in circular motion. This method is very effective for sluggish circulation, scratchy skin or for those who are prone to water retention in their body.

7. Ayurvedic Herbs for Circulation

Many herbs are known for invigorating and purifying blood circulation. Incorporating herbs like Arjuna for strengthening heart muscles, Ashwagandha for reducing stress and inflammation, Triphala for detoxifying and improving digestive health, and Turmeric for its anti-inflammatory and blood thinning properties.  These herbs when taken as teas, powders or capsules, offer gentle yet real improvements when used under professional supervision.

8. A Balanced Diet

Nutrition is a big deal in our lives. Proper diet is to be followed and maintained on an everyday basis. Eating fresh, seasonal and easily digestible foods customized to your dosha type supports overall circulation and health. Eating with mindfulness also affects our health greatly. Eating while being seated, chewing slowly and without distractions

9. Stress Management

Mental stress causes vasoconstriction and impedes circulation. Practice of simple breathing exercises like pranayama and anulom-vilom (alternate nostril breathing), Bhramari (humming bee), deep belly breathing, and meditation will help to reduce stress, relax arteries, and enhance blood flow.

10. Foot Marma Therapy

Feet are our map to numerous vital organs. Stimulating specific ayurvedic pressure points on your feet and legs helps improve localised circulation and energy flow. This routine will help us in inducing relaxation and is helpful to those with diabetes, cold feet, and those who spend a lot of time standing or walking.

11. Panchakarma Detoxification

it is a classical ayurvedic purification that involves periodic cleansing therapies to remove toxins, rejuvenate blood and restore optimal function to the circulatory system. Panchakarma should only be undertaken under expert guidance of an ayurvedic doctor for maximum efficacy and safety.
