The monsoon season is the best time of year, as it offers that well-deserved cool environment after enduring the scorching hot summer. 

Although the rainy season comes with joy, it also has several downsides. The monsoon season is when mosquitoes and waterborne diseases like the common flu, viral fever, cold, cough, sore throat, malaria, dengue, cholera, typhoid, and digestive problems breed. In light of this, many kinds of wellness issues develop during the rainy season, when the body's immune system gets weaker. During the monsoon season, Ayurvedic medicine is essential to maintain optimal health.

Rainy Season Ayurvedic Health Tips

As per Ayurveda, the monsoon or “Varsha Ritu” is important because it changes the dosha, which in turn causes many different illnesses. Therefore, finding out about doshas as soon as possible can be crucial. To stay healthy, Ayurveda offers recommendations such as changing your habits to balance your doshas during the rainy season. It's better to deal with health problems with natural, side-effect-free Ayurvedic habits and treatments instead of popping pills. 

1. Ritucharya: Aligning with the Rainy Season

Ayurveda tells us how important Ritucharya, or yearly habits, are. During Varsha Ritu, Kapha dosha (earth and water elements) tends to build up, which can make you feel heavy, clogged up, and unable to absorb food quickly. At the same time, the rapid drop in temperature and rise in humidity can make Vata dosha worse, which can lead to anxiety and stiff joints. My first monsoon routine is always to warm up from the inside out. I give up cold drinks for warm water and herbal infusions all day.

2. Warming Herbal Teas and Bitters

An effortless but effective Ayurvedic health tip for the monsoon is to start the day with a warm herbal tea. Ginger-tulsi tea with black pepper makes agni stronger and keeps you from getting cold. If you want to improve your digestion and immune system slowly, drink this mix 30 minutes before breakfast. Drinking cinnamon-cardamom tea daily can help clear mucus and improve breathing if you have lung congestion.

Digestive bitters and herbal teas are crucial.  Taking a few drops of a bitter medicine made from dandelion root or gentian before a meal can help you feel less tired and reduce gas.  These bitters help your body make more bile, which keeps you from getting too full from heavy summer foods.

3. Monsoon-Friendly Diet: Light, Warm, and Nourishing

"Think monsoon, think soup," I tell my patients. Warm, freshly cooked meals keep the metabolism in check and soothe the digestive system. Here are my go-to guidelines:

  • Pick grains that are already cooked, like wheat mush, barley bread, or rice.
  • Add many light lentils, like moong dal.
  • To help your body process food, add ginger, cumin, asafoetida, and black pepper to your food.
  • When you're done cooking, add a teaspoon of cow's ghee to help joints and muscles stay healthy.

Stay away from cold drinks, chilled treats, and raw salads because they can all make Kapha worse and make the digestive system feel cold. Instead, enjoy thin vegetable soups with coriander and turmeric. These are good for you and full of vitamins.

4. Herbal Immunity Boosters

Hundreds of seasonal illnesses break out during the monsoon. To make your defenses stronger, I suggest these Ayurvedic allies:

  • Tinospora cordifolia, or Giloy: Giloy is known for its ability to change the immune system. It boosts the body's natural defenses and lowers fevers.
  • Turmeric (Curcuma longa): It helps with respiratory and digestive problems because it reduces inflammation and saves cells from damage. It works great to put a pinch of warm milk every day, also known as "golden milk."
  • Triphala: This herbal remedy is a blend of three fruits that helps the body gently get rid of toxins, keeps the bowels regular, and stops the buildup of toxins, which is essential when humidity makes it hard for the body's natural elimination routes to work.

As a doctor, I often mix these plants into a mild daily tonic that I give to my patients after dinner. It helps them sleep well and wake up with a strong digestive system.

5. Balancing Doshas: Vata and Kapha Harmony

It's important to keep Vata and Kapha in balance through Varsha Ritu:

  • To calm Vata, eat warm foods and oils that are good for the earth. Self-massage (Abhyanga) with warm sesame oil every day can help calm the nervous system, feed the skin deeply, and boost blood flow.
  • Light cardio or gentle yoga moves can help balance Kapha. I show my patients how to do routines like Surya Namaskar that have been changed to include more dynamic holds to get their metabolism going without making them too tired.

6. Detox Practices: Panchakarma Mini-Cleanse

Even though the best time for full Panchakarma therapies is when the seasons change, you can still use simple detox routines at home:

  • Nasyam: Use a few drops of plant nasal oil every morning to clear out your sinuses and improve blood flow to your brain.
  • Warm Oil Foot Bath: A warm oil foot bath with a tablespoon of coconut oil and a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil can help keep your feet from getting fungal diseases, which are common during the monsoon season.
  • Gentle Rhassoul Clay Mask: Putting a thin layer on your face once a week soaks up extra moisture, keeps pores from getting clogged, and wakes up dull skin.

7. Skin and Hair Care: Moisture Management

Fungal diseases and dull hair can be caused by the monsoon humidity. Here are recommendations from my desk:

  • To keep your skin moist without clogging pores, choose water-based lotions that aren't greasy and contain aloe vera or rose water.
  • Cover your wet hair with a silk scarf after taking a shower before going outside. This stops hair from frizzing and breaking.
  • Fungus and lice can be kept away with weekly treatments of coconut or almond oil that has been mixed with neem.

8. Restful Sleep Rituals

The nights after a monsoon can be both relaxing and restless. To get a good night's sleep:

  • Relax with a cup of valerian or chamomile tea.
  • Make sure your bedroom has good airflow, and stay away from heavy blankets that trap wetness.
  • A light diffuser mix of lavender and sandalwood can help you relax and fall asleep without any interruptions.

Getting enough sleep is essential for keeping your mind and body strong during the wet season.

9. Savoring Seasonal Tastes

In Ayurveda, the six tastes—sour, salty, spicy, bitter, and astringent—are celebrated. During the rainy season, the sour taste of amla and the salty taste of lavana help digestion and reduce hunger. Adding a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of rock salt to a small plate of steamed pumpkin makes it taste great and is therapeutic.

Embracing the monsoon season doesn't have to mean giving in to sickness or tiredness. You can make this season full of energy and balance by aligning with Ritucharya, putting warmth and lightness first in your food and lifestyle, and using focused herbal therapies.
